A milestone was achieved on December 22, 2018 at 03.17 am China local time (08.17 am Moscow time), that is the ‘Start of Commercial Operation for Power Unit 4 of the Tianwan NPP (TNPP).’

Thus, the stage of commissioning the TNPP Unit 4 nuclear island has successfully finished. All tests stipulated by the Commissioning Program for the TNPP Power Units 3 and 4 have been conducted. The tests have proved the nuclear island complies with the technical specifications and safety requirements set forth in the Contract. The near future will see the signing of a Preliminary Acceptance Certificate for the Tianwan NPP Unit 4 nuclear island based on the conducted tests in accordance with the General Contract for Units 3 and 4 of Tianwan NPP made by and between Atomstroyexport (part of the Rosatom’s Engineering Division) as the Russian General Contractor and Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation (JNPC).

‘This means that a two-year warranty period for the plant operation has commenced, and once expired the Unit will be ultimately handed over to the Chinese Party. We can confidently state that the second stage of the Tianwan NPP has been built fully on schedule and it is evidenced by this important event. It is also worth noting that such a crucial stage as the start of TNPP Unit 4 commercial operation in December 2018 means that joint efforts of Russian and Chinese specialists allowed two Units of Tianwan NPP, Units 3 and 4, to be brought into operation in 2018. We take great pride in the fact that this strenuous work was performed in accordance with the contractual schedule adopted in 2010. It is particularly symbolic to witness this event on the day when a professional holiday, the Power Engineer Day, is celebrated in Russia,’ says Mr. Alexey Bannik, Vice President for Projects in China, ROSATOM’s Engineering Division

Tianwan NPP handover for commercial operation means that electricity generated by the Unit 4 is starting to be supplied to the national grid of China at the fixed price quoted by the authorities.

For reference:

The construction of Tianwan NPP relies on the Russian VVER-1000 reactor design that fully meets the requirements of modern regulatory and technical documents of China, the Russian Federation and IAEA. The Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant is being constructed by the Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation (JNPC) in cooperation with the Russian company Atomstroyexport.

ASE (Rosatom State Corporation Engineering Division) was established by merging the leading companies of the industry: JSC ASE EC, JSC Atomstroyexport, JSC Atomenergoproekt and JSC ATOMPROEKT. ASE is one of the global leaders in the nuclear power engineering business holding 31% of the global NPP construction market. Its representative offices, branches and front offices are operating in the territories of 15 countries. Almost 80% of the order portfolio is composed of overseas projects.

It implements design and construction projects for high-power NPPs, RAW and SNF management facilities, thermal power facilities, and renders a full range of EPC, EPC(M) and PMC services for any complex engineering facilities. ASE is a developer and active promoter of the innovative Multi-D project management system in the field of complex engineering facilities construction that allows more efficient management of such parameters as budget, deadlines and quality.
