Sevastopol may become world center of military history tourism, lawmaker says

The Crimean port city is home to ancient historical landmarks and military history monuments

Sevastopol has the potential to turn into the world center of military history tourism, considering that the Crimean port city is home to ancient historical landmarks and military history monuments, Sevastopol legislature deputy Alexei Chaly told TASS on Monday.

“I believe that some things we have here are growth points of the world rather than only of the federal level,” said Chaly, one of the leaders of “the Russian Spring” on the Black Sea peninsula in 2014 when Crimea reunited with Russia.

“From the viewpoint of the country’s history, military history and the number of artefacts linked with history, I believe that nothing of this kind can be found anywhere in Russia,” the lawmaker said.

As TASS reported earlier, the Sevastopol authorities are discussing jointly with the expert community a strategy of the city’s social and economic development through 2020.

Under the strategy, tourism is one of the priority areas of the city’s development.

The Sevastopol authorities believe that the city has large potential for developing event-related and thematic tourism. Sevastopol is home to the Chersonesos Taurica museum that contains unique archeological artefacts dating back to the history of this ancient Greek city that existed until the Middle Ages.

Also, Sevastopol lived through two heroic defenses during the Crimean war of 1854-1855 and the Soviet Union’s fight against Nazi Germany on the peninsula in 1941-1942 and the peninsula’s liberation from fascists in May 1944.
