Thomas Hammond, a professor at the University of Virginia and a specialist in Russian and Soviet history, made several trips to the Soviet Union before its collapse in 1991.
During his travels, he visited many Soviet cities, taking more than 3,000 photos along the way.
A newly presented series of his photographs taken from 1956 to 1975 depicts scenes of Soviet life, culture, nature and people. The photos show scenes of everyday Soviet life as well as its special moments, transporting the viewer back through the decades.
