Prosecutors launched an effort to close down Memorial, Russia’s top human rights organization. In Siberia’s coal-mining Kemerovo region, 46 miners and five rescuers died after a methane gas explosion at the Listvyazhnaya coal.
Meanwhile, as Russians started to stock up ahead of the New Year holidays, prices for red roe, a traditional New Year’s delicacy, hit their highest price since President Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000.
