Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant (NCCP), an enterprise of TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom, has been awarded as the winner of the tender by the Brazilian Eletronuclear company for supplies of more than 100 kg of lithium-7 hydroxide. This product will be used in the reactor cooling system of both operating power units of the Admiral Alvaro Alberto NPP (Angra NPP).
NCCP’s participation in the tender was facilitated by Rusatom International Network. After the contract is signed, the product should be shipped to Brazil by the end of 2023.
“ROSATOM’s fuel division is one of the leaders in the global market of lithium products and a reliable supplier. Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant has more than a 60 years long expertise in production of various lithium compounds. The enterprise has a modern high-tech production facility which ensures a high degree of chemical purity in accordance with customer requirements,” Mikhail Metelkin, Director of the Special Chemicals Business Unit at TVEL JSC, commented.
For reference:
Lithium-7 of high purity (with atomic fraction of lithium-7 isotope not less than 99.9%) produced by NCCP facility is traditionally applied in nuclear power industry as an additive to primary coolant of PWR reactors to improve primary water-chemistry conditions. It is also used for making chemical reagents as a main component in preparation of nuclear grade ion-exchange membranes, which make a part of water preparation equipment for reactor coolant system.
Angra NPP is the only operation nuclear power plant in Brazil, located in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro. It has two operating units with PWR reactors with a total electric capacity of 1,884 MW, and another unit under construction. According to the IAEA, its annual electricity generation is about 1.7 billion kWh.
