On December 14, the annual seminar for partners and suppliers of the Hanhikivi 1 NPP project was held in Oulu, Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland. The Hanhikivi 1 Business Day 2021 was organized by the Finnish Nuclear Industry Association FinNuclear, ROSATOM traditionally supported the event as official partner.
This year’s edition of the event took place in hybrid format, combining in-person and online interaction. The venue in Oulu brought together 63 participants, with 60 more people joining through the online platform, where ROSATOM presented its virtual exhibition booth.
Fennovoima Oy (the customer, license applicant and future operator of Hanhikivi 1 NPP) provided the participants with a project status update. Mihail Tchitcherin, Communications Manager, noted the solid progress of the licensing stage and preparations for main construction at the NPP site. Mel Jones, Supply Chain Development Director, outlined Fennovoima’s expectations with regard to participating companies as well as suppliers needed for execution of works within Fennovoima’s scope.
The Hanhikivi 1 NPP project status and the progress of on-site works were further detailed by RAOS Project Oy, the NPP general supplier (a 100% subsidiary of JSC REIN, part of ROSATOM). Dr. Rainer Goehring, Site Director, announced that all batches of Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) have now been finalized and submitted to Fennovoima Oy. Based on PSAR, the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) will provide its assessment of the plant’s safety, a prerequisite for the construction license to be granted by the Finnish Government. Vitalii Kriushov, Warehousing and Storage Manager, gave a presentation on the organization of equipment storage, loading and unloading operations at Hanhikivi Warehouse Area. It is expected that the supply of heavy and oversized equipment to the site will begin in 2023.
The project subcontractors were in the focus of presentations delivered by JSC CONCERN TITAN-2, the main contractor for NPP construction. Konstantin Avvakumov, Hanhikivi 1 Program Director, profiled the company’s role in the project. Elizaveta Heyshho, Head of procurement team for the Hanhikivi 1 NPP construction program, presented opportunities for subcontractors. Egor Krasnikov, Supply Chain Manager, elaborated on the contracting procedures. Continuing the topic, a speaker from the Czech company Metrostav that participates in the main foundation pit development at the NPP site, shared the company’s experience as a subcontractor.
For the first time, the list of Hanhikivi 1 Business Day participants was joined by RASU JSC, I&C designer, integrator, and overall supplier for the Hanhikivi 1 NPP project. Today, RASU has contracts with 15 counterparts in various fields in Finland. Nikolai Shaulov, Director of RASU Branch in Finland, provided an overview of cooperation with Fortum and Enersense and pointed out that the company is now interested in suppliers for joint engineering works and independent I&C expertise.
Representatives of Raahe region and Pyhäjoki municipality, where the Hanhikivi 1 NPP site is located, also shared their visions. They outlined the positive effects of the project for the local economy already at its current stage, and highlighted the priorities for development of regional infrastructure required to implement the large-scale NPP construction project: transport and logistics, commercial estate, HoReCa business, retail and public services.
Concluding the presentations program, Mihail Tchitcherin conducted a virtual tour around the Hanhikivi NPP construction site for the seminar participants.
This site tour was followed by a 3-hour B2B meetings session, with meetings arranged both offline and online. In total, Hanhikivi 1 project participants held around 100 meetings with potential Finnish and international partners.
RAOS Project is a member of FinNuclear Association since 2018. Many joint events have been organized for the Hanhikivi project supply chain both in Finland and Russia where Finnish and interested EU companies can learn about the project structure and developments, Rosatom requirements and procurement practices, potential project needs and upcoming tenders. Cooperation with FinNuclear Association is constantly developing for the benefit of nuclear industry.
About the Hanhikivi 1 NPP construction project
The Hanhikivi-1 Project provides for the construction of a single-unit NPP based on a modern Russian-designed Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactor with a capacity of 1200 MW. The customer, owner and operator of the future NPP is the Finnish company Fennovoima Oy. The Hanhikivi-1 NPP will be built on the Hanhikivi cape in the municipality of Pyhäjoki in the Finnish region of Northern Ostrobothnia. RAOS Project Oy (a 100% subsidiary of JSC REIN, part of Rosatom) is the general supplier of Hanhikivi 1 NPP under the EPC contract signed with Fennovoima Oy on December 21, 2013. At present, the project is at the stage of licensing and preparatory work at the NPP construction site.
