On April 15 in Sochi, at the ATOMEXPO 2019 International Forum, the heads of administrations of “nuclear” cities discussed the draft international standard “Sustainable development of small and medium-sized cities”, prepared by experts of the Technical Committee 268 “Sustainable cities and communities” of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Rusatom Infrastructural Solutions LLC , Technical Committee 465 “Construction”, the Federal Center for Standardization and Technical Conformity Assessment in Construction of the Ministry of Construction of Russia.
Today such a standard is not available, whereas its implementation will allow settlements to efficiently improve the quality of life of their citizens and to plan the future taking into account the indicators of sustainable development: to introduce globally standardized, comparable data, to receive information on the functioning of other cities, to exchange experiences. The standard is expected to be of a practical nature. In this regard, it was important for the creators of the document to receive feedback from representatives of administrations of “nuclear” cities directly interested in the process of standardization of sustainable development.
“It is very important to establish information exchange between the heads of nuclear cities and representatives of international standardization bodies. On the one hand, mayors get access to the best international practices and approaches to the development of cities, and on the other hand, international experts get feedback and practical recommendations on the standard being developed,” noted Ksenia Sukhotina, Ksenia Sukhotina, CEO of Rusatom Infrastructure Solutions LLC, a company that integrates solutions of Rosatom in the area of smart cities. She also added that Rosatom considers smart cities not only as the introduction of digital services and solutions, but above all as a tool to achieve one of the goals of the UN — sustainable development of cities and communities.
In his welcoming speech to the participants of the ATOMEXPO 2019 Forum, Bernard Gindroz, Chairman of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 268 on “Sustainable cities and communities”, noted that the mission and strategy of ISO/TC 268 is closely linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and fully supports them. He expressed the hope that the adopted standards and draft documents of ISO’s Technical Committee will help to advance current activities towards smarter, more resilient and sustainable cities. “The future starts today, and we are all responsible for what it will be, here and now,” said Bernard Gindroz.
