The “The Sustainable Development of Cities: The Nuclear Industry’s Contribution” roundtable discussion will be held as part of the ATOMEXPO 2019 International Forum in Sochi.
The discussion will feature an international panel of experts with extensive managerial experience at the global, national and local levels representing international organizations, government agencies and the corporate sector. It will be moderated by the Head of the Sustainable Business Center at Moscow School of Management Skolkovo, Natalia Zaytseva.
Participants in the roundtable will discuss the overarching influence of the global nuclear industry on the sustainable socioeconomic development of modern cities, including both the effects of the operating activities of companies as well as their projects in corporate social responsibility, creating a comfortable urban environment, introducing digital technologies and protecting the environment. Representatives of Rosatom will talk about the years of experience accumulated by the state corporation in supporting and developing “nuclear” cities, creating a comfortable and safe urban environment, providing favourable conditions for developing human capital, and improving the living conditions and quality of life of the people. Specifically, President of JSC TVEL Natalia Nikipelova will discuss the best examples of partnerships with regional governments, municipal administrations and local business communities, as well as about the key social initiatives in the areas where the company operates and their impact on the quality of life of the people in those areas. Ksenia Sukhotina, CEO of Rusatom Infrastructural Solutions, will talk about her company’s experience in creating a comfortable urban environment using Lean Smart City technologies and implementing projects to modernize municipal infrastructure using effective and transparent public private partnership tools. In addition, Head of the Administration of the closed town of Sarov Aleksey Golubev will present the initial results of Rosatom’s “Smart City” project, which has been named one of the best practices of the UN-Habitat for the Sustainable Development Goals.
Special attention will be paid at the roundtable to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Coordinator at the UN-Habitat Amaya Celaya Alvarez will talk about the current UN agenda with regard to sustainable urban development. Another international organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will be represented at the event, with the Secretary of the IAEA’s Technical Working Group on Nuclear Desalination Ibrahim Khamis set to talk about the practical experience of the global nuclear industry in providing the population with fresh water. Foreign experts will be widely represented at the event, with members of local governments, including “nuclear” cities, slated to appear. Representatives of the local governments of Soulaines-Dhuys (France), Gerjen, Paks (both in Hungary) and Astravyets (Belarus) will talk about their experiences. Participants in the roundtable will also have the opportunity to learn about the experience of Slovakia, one of the biggest producers of nuclear energy in the world in relative terms, with Executive Vice President of the Slovak Nuclear Forum Peter Liska set to give a presentation.
The roundtable will be held at 10am on April 16, 2019 in the Grey Hall of the Main Media Center.

The main topic for this year’s Forum is “Nuclear for better life.” For the first time in the history of the Forum, the business programme has been compiled by the International Programme Committee, which is made up of: Director-General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency William Magwood, Director General of the World Nuclear Association (WNA) Agneta Rising, former Chairman of the World Association of Nuclear Operators Jacques Régaldo and former Director-General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency Luis E. Echávarri, among others. ATOMEXPO 2019 participants (heads of state structures, major companies and public organizations, as well as international experts) will discuss global issues in the development of carbon-free energy, a responsible approach to the environment and natural resources, green investments and international partnerships for sustainable development. Among the key topics at roundtables are: the non-energy application of nuclear and radiation technologies in industry, science, medicine and agriculture; digital solutions for infrastructure projects; knowledge management; and the development of human capital assets. A number of important documents are expected to be signed on the side-lines of the Forum, including agreements on strategic cooperation and partnership, commercial contracts and documents on the development of projects. The exhibition will feature a wide range of advanced nuclear technologies and new products, including products that are not related to the energy industry. The exhibition area will take up over 13,000 square metres.
The 10th anniversary ATOMEXPO Forum in 2018 attracted over 4000 delegates and guests from 68 countries (compared to 65 countries in 2017 and 55 countries in 2016). The exhibition took place on a total area of 20,000 square metres (compared to 12,000 square metres in 2017). Over 600 companies took part in the event. A total of 39 agreements and other documents on cooperation and partnership, including commercial contracts, were signed on the side-lines of ATOMEXPO 2018.
