On March 24 in Vienna in the Headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General of ROSATOM Alexei Likhachev had a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
The main topic of discussion was joint efforts to promote peaceful atom as clean source of electricity generation as well as the contribution of nuclear power to achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Alexei Likhachev and Rafael Grossi agreed to coordinate efforts on the climate agenda at the respective international platforms.
The role of small modular reactors was noted both from the point of view of satisfaction of growing energy needs in developing countries and for co-generation purposes and hydrogen production. The issues were touched upon of the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle, especially, management of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. The Russian party noted that it is ready to share with the IAEA its experience and expertise in these areas.
The Russian delegation confirmed ROSATOM’s intention to support work of the IAEA Secretariat in main areas of activity of the IAEA Statute. In particular, Alexei Likhachev announced the decision to financially support the concluding phase of the project to upgrade IAEA laboratories in Seibersdorf (Austria).
A special attention was paid to the topic of human resources development for the nuclear sector and work with the youth. Alexei Likhachev invited Rafael Grossi to take part in the International Youth Nuclear Congress scheduled for 2022.
