In Photos: Industrial Cleanup Efforts in Russia’s Far North

More than 70 volunteers and scientists from across Russia this week completed a major ecological cleanup effort in Russia’s Far North.

The bulk of efforts took place in the village of Khatanga, which has a population of about 3,000 and is one of Russia’s northernmost inhabited settlements.

The first stage of the Russian Geographical Society’s “Arctic: General Cleaning” initiative saw more than 200 tons of industrial waste cleaned up.

The second phase is scheduled for 2024.
