ROSATOM and AKKUYU NUCLEAR part in NPPES-2023

23 June 2023, Istanbul, Türkiye – ROSATOM and AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC took part in the Nuclear Power Plants V Expo and IX Summit (NPPES), which was held on 21-22 June in Istanbul, Türkiye. ROSATOM acted as the main partner of the annual industry forum, Türkiye’s largest business platform in the area of nuclear technologies and industry; and took an active part in its business program. The representatives of ROSATOM and AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC told the participants and guests of the event about the status of implementation of construction of the first nuclear power plant in Türkiye, and speakers of various Rosatom divisions presented new areas of cooperation with Turkish companies in the area of nuclear and non-nuclear technologies as part of the business program of the Summit.

The Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of AKKUYU NUCLEAR Anastasia Zoteeva said, while welcoming the participants of the forum: “The companies of the Akkuyu NPP project annually take part in the events of the NPPES Summit”. This is a communication platform for all the potential participants in the construction of Türkiye’s first nuclear power plant. It is very important for us to provide up-to-date information on the project to all the Turkish suppliers that are developing their expertise in the area of nuclear power. We are continuing to actively involve the representatives of various industries of Türkiye into the project and expand the horizon of business proposals of Rosatom State Corporation, which has been taking the lead in a number of applications of nuclear technologies for many decades”.

Anton Dedusenko, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, spoke at the opening ceremony of NPPES-2023. “We highly value our partnership with the Republic of Türkiye and see huge potential for its development. Rosatom is always open to discussing new avenues of cooperation with the Turkish side. Of course, this can include new projects for large-capacity NPP construction, but it goes far beyond that. We are ready to offer our potential Turkish customers products and solutions in the fields ranging from water treatment to research reactors and nuclear medicine, – said the speaker.

This year, for the first time ROSATOM presented a comprehensive proposal at the NPPES, which includes the products of the companies of the State Corporation in the nuclear and non-nuclear sectors for the Turkish market. Faraç Alemdar, Business Development and Sales Director at RAOS Energy (subsidiary of JSC Rusatom Energy International (REIN) that acts as an industry integrator and promotes the products of ROSATOM in Türkiye) presented a review report at the special session.  Dmitry Repin, (solutions in water treatment, water cleaning and desalination, Rusatom Infrastructure Solutions), Alexey Kovalevich, (modeling and simulators, GET JSC), Arda Sapankaya, (biogas and hydroenergetics, Rusatom Service JSC branch in the Republic of Türkiye) and Ksenia Nikolaeva, (multi-purpose solutions based on research reactors, RAOS JSC) also participated as speakers in the session.

Denis Sezemin, Director for Construction and Production Organization of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, spoke at the forum. He reported on the status of the construction of each of the power units and answered the questions that the journalists raised. 

This year, at the first power unit of Akkuyu NPP, we have to complete general construction installation activities and ensure the readiness of power distribution facilities, coastal facilities, and auxiliary buildings necessary to start commissioning operations. The Akkuyu NPP project is creating a new industry in Türkiye. The country is acquiring a more stable energy system, gaining an opportunity to develop competencies in the nuclear power industry and to subsequently enter international markets for its manufacturers. The Akkuyu NPP project already contributes to economic growth, development of infrastructure, local production, scientific and educational spheres, and other industries and will continue to stimulate the development of Türkiye for decades to come, – Sezemin said. He also spoke about the positive dynamics in the implementation of the Akkuyu NPP localization program. “Over the past year, the total amount of contracts with the Turkish companies for the supply of equipment, materials and services for the project has increased by more than USD 1 billion, from USD 3.2 to USD 4.3 billion, – the speaker emphasized.

The following keynote speakers gave their presentations at the panel discussion of the Summit entitled “XXI Century Nuclear Industry: Safety, Reliability, Environmental Friendliness”: Mikhail Chudakov, Deputy Director General, Head of the Department of Nuclear Energy, IAEA; Alexander Voronkov, Regional Vice-President, Director of Rosatom Middle East and North Africa; Hakan Hatipoğlu, Expert of The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Türkiye; Necati Kaya, Deputy Director General of Türkiye Nuclear Energy Company (TÜNAŞ); Dr. Oğuz Can, Vice President, Nuclear Regulatory Authority; as well as Prof. Dr. Ahmet Demirak, Director of Environmental Problems Research Center of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University.

ROSATOM and AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, together with the main contractor for Akkuyu NPP, TİTAN2 IC İÇTAŞ – a Russian and Turkish joint venture, held a workshop for potential suppliers of the project at the summit. The representatives of the companies shared information on the procurement system of ROSATOM, localization of orders in the Republic of Türkiye and practical examples of the Akkuyu NPP project interactions with Turkish suppliers. The Akkuyu NPP construction project is actively developing, while providing opportunities for long-term cooperation for a growing number of partners. The potential and existing project suppliers asked questions about participation in procurement procedures for the Akkuyu NPP project and received detailed answers from experts in procurement activities at the seminar. 

ROSATOM and AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC presented a stand with mirror panels at the NPPES-2023 in the style of the Akkuyu NPP – unique architectural concept emphasizing the up-to-dateness and high technology nature of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant. The specialists of ROSATOM and AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC answered questions raised by the guests of the stand about various business areas and ROSATOM’s international projects, provided information about engineering solutions used in the Akkuyu NPP project, VVER-1200 generation 3+ reactor technology, safety systems, as well as about the progress of the project. There was also a lecture hall area at the stand, where AKKUYU NUCLEAR specialists made a presentation to students of Istanbul universities about Akkuyu NPP project and the importance of nuclear energy for the technological development of Turkey. A video tour of the Akkuyu NPP construction site was broadcast on the big screen, in which the Turkish nuclear engineers who received special education in Russia acted as guides. After the video tour was shown, the stand personnel asked questions to the guests and gave souvenirs to those who answered correctly.

The International NPPES Summit is the most serious dialogue platform where companies operating in the field of nuclear energy, suppliers of the nuclear industry, national regulator of the Republic of Türkiye and other relevant institutions are brought together. It is organized by the Association of Nuclear Power Engineers (NMD) and the Ankara Chamber of Industry. The event is held with the support of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Türkiye and Turkish Nuclear Industry Association (NIATR). Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation and AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC became the main partners of the summit for the second time.

Over the two days, the seminar was attended by more than 300 delegates of NPPES-2023 Summit, representatives of Turkish and foreign supplier companies and nuclear industry enterprises. The extended program of the seminar made it possible to embrace a large number of participants and answer the questions of potential suppliers of the project. The business program of the summit was attended by the representatives of about 100 companies. It also included bilateral B2B meetings with procurement specialists from AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC and the joint venture. 

The NPPES-2023 exhibition featured stands of companies from Türkiye, Russia, China, South Korea, India, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy and other countries. More than 1300 delegates and guests attended the NPPES-2023 Summit.
