Rosatom Technical Academy has Completed Two Weeks Training on VVER-1200 technology for Bangladesh Specialists

The Rosatom Technical Academy under the support of JSC Rusatom Service has organized a two-week training course for specialists from the People’s Republic of Bangladesh “Technological Aspects of AES-2006 (VVER-1200). Development of Nuclear Curricula on VVER Technology”. The course was held online in support of the ROSATOM activities on the Rooppur NPP construction.

More than 50 participants, specialists and managers of the country organizations, attended the event representing by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA), Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Ltd (NPCBL) and the faculty member of republic’s universities as well.

Alexey Deriy, Vice-president of JSC ASE – director of the Rooppur NPP construction project, addressed to the course attendees: “Bangladesh’s nuclear power development strategy will make a significant contribution to the development of clean energy, the creation of new jobs and the development of the country’s nuclear education”.

Director of the Rooppur NPP construction project Dr. Shawkat Akbar said: “Our specialists are interested in getting to know more about the modern safety systems of the III + VVER project, to learn about its technological and economic advantages”.

For two weeks experts from the Rosatom Technical Academy and JSC ASE have been training students for various basic aspects of VVER-1200 reactor technology, operation and safety of NPP-2006 plants, and engineering aspects of nuclear fuel. The participants got acquainted with Russian simulation codes for the safety assessment of VVER reactors, modeling techniques, economic and comparative assessment of nuclear energy systems using the INPRO approach and the MESSAGE-NES, KIND-ET, NEST tools, as well as the process of developing curricula on nuclear technologies at universities with an emphasis on the practical component.

“This course is an important tool for the transfer of nuclear education and methodological support for the faculty staff of Bangladesh universities and experts in the development and implementation of appropriate curricula in nuclear and related specialties based on VVER technology in order to train the best domestic specialists for the Rooppur NPP of the national education system of Bangladesh” – stressed out Valery Karezin, director of educational programs of ROSATOM.

Pavel Zhuravlev, Vice-Rector – Director of the Department for International Cooperation and International Business Development, spoke on behalf of Rosatom Technical Academy, noting that the course provides an excellent opportunity for a comprehensive understanding by specialists of the nuclear industry in Bangladesh of various aspects of the operation of power units with VVER-1200, including safety issues. This will allow employees of the organizations dealing with a nuclear energy issues to approach in more detail and consciously from an expert point of view to the solution of problems associated with the project for the construction of the Rooppur NPP. In addition, the knowledge of the Russian experience in developing practice-based educational programmes, obtained from this training course, will serve as a good help to the teaching staff of specialized nuclear universities in the preparation of highly qualified domestic specialists for the nuclear industry of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

First time on the online format training course the virtual technical tour has been organized to Leningrad NPP-2 VVER-1200 power unit. The participants were introduced with the layout of the NPP site, construction of the reactor and turbine islands and were be able to look at the video with cooling tower operating. The online tour has been organized by the representatives of JSC Rosenergoatom and Leningrad NPP-2.

Upon finishing of the training, all participants have passed the final test and they were issued with a certificates of successful completion of the training course programme.

For reference:

Courses in the Train-The-Trainers format are held by Rosatom Technical Academy on a regular basis within the framework of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom project “International Cooperation in the Field of Nuclear Education”. The courses contribute to the transfer of nuclear education – the transfer of competencies in teaching students with nuclear and radiation technologies to partner countries and constitute a line of educational events covering a wide range of topics: from electricity generation at nuclear power plants of large and small power and the production of modern radiopharmaceuticals at research reactors to the irradiation of medical materials and agricultural products and diagnostics and treatment of oncological diseases.

In 2021, despite the restrictions associated with the pandemic, the Rosatom Technical Academy, in cooperation with the flagship universities of Rosatom, successfully organized and conducted six intramural and online training courses in the Train-The-Trainers format, five of which were held in a hybrid format. 172 representatives of foreign organizations took part in the training in total.

The training course on VVER technology in the “Train-The-Trainers” format has been held by Rosatom Technical Academy for the fifth time and has recommended itself as being in demand in terms of training foreign audiences in support of establishing educational programs on VVER technology in universities of partner countries.
