Environment protection is one of the priorities for Rosneft. The Company has allocated more than 370 billion roubles for environmental activities over the past five years. In December 2018, the Company approved its public statement — “Rosneft: contributing to implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals”, confirming its commitment to high social and ecological standards.
As part of the Rosneft-2022 Strategy, the Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimizing the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production and also plans to enter the upper quartile of international companies in terms of greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2018, Rosneft started sales of new types of fuels with enhanced environmental properties—Pulsar 100 gasoline and Euro 6 gasoline, as well as a new line of fuels featuring the ACTIVE technology.
Rosneft is actively involved in the development of the natural gas motor fuel market. The Company agreed with the Chinese Beijing Gas on the development of a network of gas-filling stations in Russia—170 stations are planned to be opened. In addition, Rosneft has become a member of the National Gas-Vehicle Association in 2019.
Rosneft continues to successfully implement its Gas Programme, which includes a reduction in associated petroleum gas flaring to less than 5% by the end of 2021, the Energy Saving Programme, which reduces energy consumption and environmental emissions, as well as the overall Environmental Efficiency Improvement Programme. The Company joined the initiative of the world’s leading oil and gas companies and signed “The Guidelines for Methane Emission Reduction in Natural Gas Supply Chain.”
Rosneft is aimed at the rational use of water resources as part of its activities and takes a set of measures to protect and replenish them. The implementation of measures to improve the quality of wastewater purification for the purpose of their reuse allowed the Company to maintain the volume of water consumption in 2018 at the level of 2017, despite the increase in output. Per-capita water consumption from the surface and underground sources decreased by 3% in refining and oil and gas chemistry, and the volume of polluted waste discharge to surface waters decreased by 7%.
The Company also implements a number of programs for the biological diversity preservation in the regions of its operation: the projects “Evenk Deer”, “Evenk Geese”, “Siberian Sable”, programmes to study and preserve populations of polar bears, walruses, and Amur tigers. In 2018, the Company initiated a comprehensive research project to study the Black Sea dolphins.
Rosneft is actively involved in replenishing fish resources. In 2018, the Company released about 3.6 million fry of various fish species into rivers and reservoirs of Arkhangelsk Region, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Kamchatka Region, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District, the Republic of Karelia, and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). As part of its forest conservation activities, the Rosneft Group of Companies planted about 1 million seedlings in 2018 alone.
As part of Ecologist’s Day, which is traditionally celebrated on June 5th, the Organizing Committee of the Russia-wide environmental volunteer clean-up Green Spring named the Company the winner of the environmental marathon in 2019. More than 80 subsidiaries of the Company took part in the clean-up activities.
