On 5 April, Director General of ROSATOM Mr. Alexey Likhachev had a meeting with IAEA Director General Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi in Kaliningrad.
From the Russian side, the meeting was attended by head of Rostechnadzor Mr. Alexander Trembitskiy; Chief of Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Protection Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Mr. Igor Kirillov; Head of the General Directorate for Facilities’ Security of the Federal National Guard Troops Service Mr. Vladimir Mashevskiy; and Deputy Director of the Department for Non-proliferation and Arms Control of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Mr. Igor Vishnevetsky.
The meeting was held in the spirit of the practice established over the past year of regular exchange of views between Rosatom State Corporation and relevant Russian agencies and the IAEA Secretariat. The discussion focused on issues related to ensuring nuclear safety and security at the Zaporozhskaya NPP. Specifically the parties touched upon the results of Rafael Grossi’s visit to the plant on 29 March this year and the rotation of the IAEA experts present at the site.
Rafael Grossi was able to see by himself the consequences of the shelling of the NPP that occurred in November 2022 after his last visit. As positive news, he noted the availability of new Russian diesel generators and modular boiler houses at the plant.
Alexey Likhachev informed the IAEA Director General about the steps being taken by the Russian side to ensure the safe operation of the Zaporozhskaya NPP.
The participants of the meeting discussed the situation around the initiative of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi for ensuring nuclear safety and security at the Zaporozhskaya NPP. The readiness of the Russian side to continue work on its implementation was underlined.
The issues of current and future cooperation between Russia and the IAEA in other areas were discussed.
The parties confirmed their agreement to continue contacts.
