Sponsored by Rosneft Oil Company, the state Hermitage Museum hosts the exhibition “Piero della Francesca. Monarch of Painting” encompassing the masterpieces of one of the most prominent masters of the 15th century. The exhibition features 11 paintings of the artist and four manuscripts from art collections of Italy, Spain, Portugal and Britain.
The exhibition provides a rare opportunity for people to get acquainted with the work of this artist, as there are no works by Piero della Francesca in Russian museum collections. The majority of the master’s important paintings are in Italy, in places less often visited by tourists. Prior to that, the artist’s legacy has never been presented so vastly and diversely, and it is the first Russian exhibition of the great master.
Piero della Francesca is recognised as a key figure of the Italian Quattrocento and one of the pioneers of the laws of perspective. Among the works of Piero della Francesca, there is a unique manuscript “On Perspective in Painting” that provides a basis for an understanding of the whole of perspective and the essence of the visual illusions of the Renaissance. The Hermitage Museum presents one of the best masterpieces of the artist, “The Madonna di Senigallia”. The exhibition is hosted in the state Hermitage until March 10.
