News from projects and regions
On February 10, Novy Urengoy’s Gazodobytchik Culture and Sports Center hosted the 20th annual open dancesport competition Urengoy Waltz.
The tournament combined an open competition for the Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy Cup with the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area dancesport contest and championship. This festival of dance has for many years been organized by Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy.
The contest brought together 466 couples from 15 different sports clubs from the cities and towns of Noyabrsk, Salekhard, Muravlenko, Gubkinsky, Ishim and Novy Urengoy in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area and the Tyumen Region. The gas capital of Russia was represented by seven dance teams: Oniona, Vostorg, Dens-Nova, Sharm+Pa, Alyans, the Yamburg Sports School, and the Zvezdny Sports Palace.
The independent board of judges made up of 31 top-class professional adjudicators assessed the technique, musicality and expression of the dancers’ performances.
As is customary in this sport, the contest divided participants into five age categories: children, juniors, youth, adults, and seniors. It featured European and Latin programs with slow waltz, the passionate cha-cha-cha, tango, foxtrot, quickstep, jive, and rhumba.
In spite of strong competition and strict refereeing, the dancers from Novy Urengoy won places in every age group. The participants from the Oniona club (Gazodobytchik Culture and Sports Center, Novy Urengoy) won a total of 27 prizes: eleven first, nine second, and seven third prizes. The contestants of the Evrika Club from Muravlenko won 17 prizes, and the Alyans Club dancers from Novy Urengoy took home 15 prizes.
It is noteworthy that Urengoy Waltz has been attracting an increasing number of dancers every year, which encourages them to improve their performance and perfect their professional skills.
