Jewish Diasporas in Europe and Beyond: Fieldwork

2nd International conference “Jewish Diasporas in Europe and Beyond: Fieldwork and Source Studies”

20.12.2016

Dear colleagues and friends!

We are happy to announce the call for papers for the 2nd International conference “Jewish Diasporas in Europe and Beyond: Fieldwork and Source Studies” that is organized by the Department of European Studies at Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) RAS. The conference will be held in our Museum (Saint-Petersburg, Russia) in November, 6-8, 2017.

This conference continues the tradition of the academic forum “Petersburg – Israel. An Intellectual Dialogue” that has been conceptualized and created by Prof. Natalia V. Yukhnyova as an intellectual meeting point for discussions and evaluation of results within the academic community of Russia and Israel. This conference took place in Kunstkamera and Russian Ethnographic Museum for times (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013).

In 2015 our conference got a new title, and nowadays it better fits the main research projects of the Department of European Studies (MAE RAS). We warmly welcome the papers based on fieldwork materials, as well as museum and archive research.

The conference will be aimed at discussing the following issues and topics:

  • The History and Ethnography of the Jewish Diaspora in Europe
  • Jewish Language(s) and Folklore in Europe
  • Jewish Communities around the World
  • Jews and their Neighbors: Folk Religiosity, Stereotypes and Images of Jews
  • Politics of Memory: Memorialization of Jewish Culture and Museum Preservation of the Holocaust (Shoah) in European states
  • Jews in Leningrad / Petersburg (In Memoriam of Prof. Natalia V. Yukhnyova)
