Bill Murray is an eclectic staple in New York.
Although the actor and comedian now spends most of his time down south in Charleston, he’s made his mark on New York City, doing everything from filming iconic movies to bartending in Brooklyn.
On June 12, Murray will come back to New York to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge — and read poetry.
As part of the 22nd Annual Poetry Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge with Poets House, Murray will walk across the bridge while reading poetry about New York City.
Murray won’t be the only celebrated guest to walk the bridge: Renowned poets Billy Collins, Sharon Olds, Gregory Pardlo, and Claudia Rankine will all join the walk and read poems.
The 1.1-mile bridge takes approximately 45 minutes to walk across, so there should be plenty of time to soak up all things Murray.
This won’t be the first Poets Walk Murray participates in. In fact, according to Poets House executive director Lee Briccetti, he has rarely missed the bridge walk since it started in 1996.
Murray has supported the organization since the 1990s, when he provided some of the seed money for the Poets House Library. He got involved with the organization through his old neighbor, Frank Platt, who served as vice president.
“Bill fell in love with the event, with the serendipity of reading the poems on the bridge, and he’s proved himself to be a great supporter of Poets House,” she told AM New York.
Tickets for the event start at $250 for the general public and go up to $10,000 for a premier ticket at the Poets House dinner and reception following the walk.
For those who can’t afford one of the tickets, Poets House said they can’t stop the public from walking alongside. However, they encourage everyone to donate to the organization. All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the Poets House programs and public events, including over 100 literary programs for children every year.
