Must Read Russian Books
On this page I want to talk about my favorite Russian books, actually more correct to say my favorite Russian writers and their books. The books I really recommend you to read, if you interested in Russian culture or you are just like me – a books lover. Enjoy, my reader, Russian literature has a lot to offer:
Mikhail Bulgakov (he is defiantly my favorite)
The Master and Margarita, The Heart of a Dog, Flight (I recommend movie Flight and The Heart of a Dog as well), The White Guard, A Country Doctor’s Notebook, The Fatal Egg and Black Snow.
Everyone knows Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Read the book Hadji Murad by Leo Tolstoy.
Nikolai Gogol
The Collected Tales (love it!), Dead Souls, The Nose, The Overcoat, The Government Inspector.
Mikhail Lermontov – A Hero for Our Time (great book)
Alexander Pushkin – let me put this way: read everything he wrote, you won’t regret. He was a genius indeed!
The Twelve Chairs by Evgeni I Petrov and Iliya Il’f (this book is a gem that you will not want to put down!!!)
Living and the Dead by Konstantine Simonov
How the Steel Was Tempered by Nikolai Ostrovsky (I read this book when I was a teenager, was very impressed)
Anatolii Rybakov – two great books: Children of the Arbat and The Bronze Bird.
Another Life and The House on the Embankment by Yuri Trifonov
Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak
The Russian Forest by Leonid Leonov
And Quiet Flows the Don by Mikhail Sholokhov
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and Cancer Ward by Alexander Solzhenitsyn
The Zone: Prsn Cmp Grd by Moscow to the End of the Line by Venedikt Erofeev
Everybody knows Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, well he wrote another great book – The Idiot.
Talking about Idiots:)… Life with an Idiot by Victor Erofeyev is a really good book
Stories from a Siberian Village by Vasilii Shukshin
Envy by Yuri Olesha
RUSSIAN MOVIES – RENT OR PURCHASE
Plays by Alexander Ostrovsky: a Protege of the Mistress, Poverty is No Crime, Sin and Sorrow are Common to All, It’s a Family Affair – We’ll settle it Ourselves
The Elagin Affair: And Other Stories by Ivan Bunin
Sonechka: A Novella and Stories by Ludmila Ulitskaya
Selected Tales: Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District; The Enchanted Wanderer; The Left-Handed Craftsman; The Sentry; The White Eagle by Nikolai Leskov
Alexander Griboyedov – Woe from Wit (great play!)
If you are interesting about the modern authors, I would really recommend Boris Akunin’s work and Twilight by Dmitry Glukhovsky (spent night reading this book, couldn’t stop. By the way, this book has nothing to do with American vampire’s show Twilight). The Dmitry Glukhovsky also wrote Metro 2033. Not bad, but I like Twilight better.
