This famous work of the sculptor E. M. Falconet is one of the jems of world art. (The head of the rider was created by Marie-Anne CoIIot, the sculptor’s assistant, and the snake was modelled by F. G. Gordeyev, another of Falconet’s assistants). A monolithic slab for the pedestal (called Thunder Stone), weighing about 1,600 tons, was found in the vicinity of St. Petersburg. The monument was unveiled in 1782.
