Russian Pop Music

Russian pop music as a genre started its development in the time of the former Soviet Union and it was quite differ from somewhat similar trends in both the West and the East. It was really big difference between Russian pop music during Soviet era and American pop music – Russian music had more lyricism, it rejected of bright sexually suggestive lyrics, there was a presence of a taboo on the use of the obscene, censorship, greater brightness and expressiveness of the text, which was partly due to the mostly non-commercial form of this type of music in the USSR. Certain genres of music in the USSR were banned or strictly controlled (punk rock, jazz) for fear of political propaganda. Some others did not exist at all due to the lack of cultural and ethnic assumptions, unlike the U.S. and Britain. As a result, Soviet and Russian pop music was closer to traditional pop music, which is popular in Latin countries – Italy and France. In general, however, the style and format of Russian pop songs and melodies were typical of traditional Western European style and different from the so-called Eastern music.

Russian pop music market has begun to evolve with increasing Soviet influence in the world. In addition to the 300 million Soviet citizens abroad in 1990, the Soviet pop music has spread to some extent in the former Warsaw Pact countries, especially in the Slavic regions like Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria, but also in Hungary, China, and Cuba. Moscow was the center of a Russian pop music. After the Soviet collapse, Russia remains a major producer and consumer of Russian-speaking music in the World; however the demand of Russian pop music is still high in some newly independent countries, especially Ukraine and Belarus.

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Iron Curtain, the mass emigration of the early 90s, led to the formation of large Russian diasporas in the EU, Canada, USA, Australia and other regions, where local people had an opportunity to get acquainted with Russian music of different genres via the internet, satellite television, various media, music, nightclubs, etc.

Song of the Year is TV song festival and song contest in the former Soviet Union and then Russia. First held in 1971. History of the Song of the Year festivals went through a kind of liberalization, coinciding with the country’s history. On the first festivals the songs were chosen strictly by ideological principles, were in agreement with Arts Council, meet high moral and ethical standards, the singers had vocal talent and mastery of high level.Since the early years of its existence, the festival gives meaning to the main event of the year in the musical genre of song (pop, then pop music, sometimes rock music), which it retained until now.

During the year, held a number of promotional shows. The final concert films in December, which aired in early January next year on the First Channel.

Participants are determined at the discretion of the organizers, declaring the main criterion for selection of the popularity of a song within a year.
