Initiated in 1897, the first Russian Women’s Medical School became the foundation of the Institute.
On the premises of the Institute a Petrograd city conference of the Bolshevist Party was convened on April 15—19, 1917; V. I. Lenin addressed the conference on two occasions.
Beginning from the 24th of April, 1917, the sessions of the Seventh All-Russian (April) Conference of Bolsheviks were held under the guidance of V. I. Lenin in the Assembly Hall of the Institute.
Such outstanding men of Russian science as the physiologist I. P. Pavlov, the psychiatrist V. M. Bekhterev, the microbiologist D. K. Zabo-lotny, professors Y. Y. Dzhanelidze, G. F. Lang and others contributed to the foundation and development of the Institute. At present it is one of the major medical educational establishments in the country.
